Have you ever searched for and purchased a particular thing only to find later that you had actually settled for something vastly inferior? Now, ladies I am not talking about that man you married! Although, I realize that some people really do settle in this most important decision of life.

More specifically, I have reference to something like a house or a car. I remember, a number of years ago, my dad had this experience. He got it in his head that he wanted to buy a used Mercedes Benz. For any who know my dad, that does seem a little strange for this frugal, old-school man.

He searched for a while until he found his prize. I am not sure about all the details, but his prize quickly evaporated into cotton candy. On the trip home after purchasing it, it died forcing him and my mom to push the car the rest of the way home. Thus, began a battle between the dream and the reality.

Through Jeremiah the prophet, God described His people with this same picture. “For My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.” (Jeremiah 2:13) This is a vivid description of what happens every time we reject God and accept something or someone else in His place.

There are many man-made attempts to replace God. God’s covenant of marriage that produces a strong and stable home for the parents and children has been replaced by divorces, second and third marriages, and now even homosexual partnerships.

Worship as a time to give God the glory due His name while encouraging each other has been replaced by entertainment that looks a lot like a talent show and leaves people admiring the talents of people who participated rather than concentrating on the One we serve. Both of these are broken cisterns meant to replace the Fountain of Life.
