Our Shepherds

The Richmond church has been blessed through the years with Godly men who have served with dignity and love as our shepherds. In many ways, the church in Richmond today is the reflection of their strength and dedication to the truth and of their Christian example. Presently, five men serve as shepherds (or elders) to this congregation. They are Danny Hunt, Ken Johnston, Joe Koger, Bret Oakes, and Tom Riley.

As directed by the New Testament, the Richmond Church of Christ is led by elders who act as shepherds (or elders) of the spiritual flock. These men are selected by the local congregation on the basis of traits found in the scriptures (Titus 1:5-16 & 1 Timothy 3:1-7).

The shepherds (also known as elders, bishops, pastors or overseers) serve under the headship of Christ. They are to seek, in all matters, the mind of Christ, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. They are to teach and exhort the Christians whom they are among in sound doctrine and refute those who contradict the truth.

Elders are to lead by example and provide instruction for “equipping the saints for the work of ministry” as well as provide the edification needed for healthy relationships within the congregation (Ephesians 4:11-12). They appoint deacons or ministers as necessary to accomplish the mission of the church.

...shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.  1 Peter 5:2-3
