The School of God

Going to school is just what people do from about the time that they are 5 years old or so.  Some are now going to preschool, but for most, kindergarten is the beginning of several years of formal schooling.  Some people get that schooling in a public school or a private school while others are homeschooled.  Technical College, academic College and graduate school await many after those first 12 years.

There have been many famous quotes given about education and knowledge.  Here are a few:
- Education is one thing no one can take away from you.
Elin Nordegren
- Education’s purpose is to replace a closed mind with an open one.
Malcolm Forbes
- In investment in knowledge pays the best interest.
Benjamin Franklin
- Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
Nelson Mandela

Education is indispensable in this world.  No matter what job or career one may choose, there will always be knowledge that will be needed to do that work.  Furthermore, there will always be the need for ongoing knowledge and education because the work will change continually.

Spiritual education is indispensable for the world that is to come.  Jesus said, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32).  Education in this world frees one to be more successful in life.  According to Jesus, education in truth is freeing.  Truth provides the freedom to know the Lord and be confident that heaven is now the hope.

This spiritual education can only be found in God’s school.  The Bible is the only textbook.  There are many teachers providing educational understanding from this textbook.  Preachers, Bible class teachers, parents, and members of God’s family are all helping with spiritual education.  In God’s school, there is plenty time for the recess of fellowship.  And, spiritual education will not happen without the proper amount of homework.

What is the purpose behind this educational process?  The purpose can be found in Hebrews 5:12-14, “Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to reteach you the basic principles of God’s word.  You need milk, not solid food!  For everyone who lives on milk is still an infant, inexperienced in the message of righteousness.  But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil.”

Spiritual education should lead each person to become a teacher.  It seems to mean that each person should get to the point that each one can teach himself or herself without always needing to be taught by someone else.  It should be the goal of every Christian to get to the point of being able to deal with the meat of Scripture and not always turn only to the milk.  If this is what God’s school is about, the only question that remains is, “Are you in His school?”
